Buying a car is one of the bigger decisions most families make. And walking into a dealership without a plan can make the whole process feel overwhelming fast. The good news is that a short list of the right questions can change that completely.
Knowing what to ask puts you in control of the conversation. It also tells you a lot about the dealership you are dealing with. A good one will welcome your questions. A not-so-good one will dodge them.
Here are the questions worth asking before you sign anything, along with what honest answers actually look like.
1. Has this vehicle been inspected?
This is the first question to ask, and the answer matters more than almost anything else. Any reputable dealership should be inspecting vehicles before they put them on the lot. At Tillema Auto, every vehicle goes through an inspection by our mechanics before it is listed for sale. That is not something we do on request. It is part of how we operate.
If a dealership cannot tell you clearly whether a vehicle has been inspected, or by whom, that is worth paying attention to.
2. Can I see the vehicle history report?
A vehicle history report gives you a look at the car’s past: prior owners, accident history, service records, and whether the title is clean. A dealership that is confident in their inventory should have no hesitation sharing this with you.
It is also worth knowing that a history report is a starting point, not the whole picture. Not every incident makes it into the report. That is another reason why a physical inspection matters alongside the paperwork.
3. What does the warranty look like?
Used vehicles are sold in different conditions, and the warranty situation varies. At Tillema Auto, most of our vehicles come with an extended service contract that covers key components for 3 months or 3,000 miles. That coverage includes up to a set amount on the engine, water pump, transmission, and transfer case. We also offer additional coverage options if you want more protection.
Whatever dealership you are working with, ask specifically what is covered, what is not, and for how long. Get it in writing before you commit.
Note: Warranty details vary by vehicle at Tillema Auto. Ask us about coverage specifics on any vehicle you are considering.
4. Is the price negotiable?
The short answer is yes, it often is. But here is the longer answer: a dealership that prices vehicles fairly from the start does not leave a lot of room to negotiate, because the price is already where it should be.
At Tillema, we try to list our vehicles according to market value. That means many of them are already a good value before any negotiation happens. We would rather be upfront about pricing than play the back-and-forth game that frustrates buyers. If you have questions about a specific vehicle’s price, just ask us directly and we will talk through it with you.
5. What do I need to bring to complete the purchase?
This is a practical one that buyers often forget to ask until they are already at the dealership. The answer is usually straightforward. At Tillema Auto, here is what most purchases require:
- A valid driver’s license
- Proof of insurance
- Payment or financing information
If you are trading in a vehicle, bring the title, any release of lien if applicable, and all sets of keys. If you are transferring a license plate from another vehicle, bring the plate along with the registration and proof of insurance for that vehicle.
Every situation is a little different, so if you are unsure, give us a call before you come in and we will tell you exactly what to bring.
6. What are my financing options?
Not everyone walks in with cash in hand, and that is completely normal. Ask the dealership what financing looks like, what lenders they work with, and what the process looks like from application to approval. The more you understand going in, the better positioned you are to evaluate what you are being offered.
It is also worth getting pre-approved through your own bank or credit union before you shop. That gives you a number to compare against whatever the dealership can find. Take whichever works better for you.
7. Do you offer a test drive?
Any dealership worth buying from will say yes without hesitation. A test drive is not just about whether you like the feel of the vehicle. It is also a chance to listen for anything unusual and to make sure everything works the way it should.
During your test drive, pay attention to how the vehicle accelerates, brakes, and handles. Turn on the heat and air conditioning. Check the mirrors, windows, and any features you plan to use regularly. If something feels off, say so.
8. What happens if something goes wrong after I buy?
This is a question a lot of buyers do not think to ask until they need the answer. Find out upfront what the dealership’s process is if a problem comes up after the sale. Do they have a service department on site? Will they work with you, or does the relationship end the moment you drive off the lot?
At Tillema, we have a full service center and we stand behind the vehicles we sell. If you buy from us and something comes up, we are not going anywhere. You can call us, bring it in, and we will take a look.
9. Are there any additional fees I should know about?
This is worth asking directly before you get to the paperwork stage. Legitimate fees like title and registration are standard and expected. What you want to understand is whether there are any other charges being added that were not part of the original conversation.
A transparent dealership will walk you through the full cost before you sign. If a number shows up on the paperwork that you did not discuss, ask about it. You are entitled to a clear explanation of every line item.
10. Can I have the vehicle inspected by my own mechanic?
A confident dealership will say yes. If a dealership pushes back on this or makes it difficult, that tells you something important.
Getting an independent inspection is a reasonable step, especially for higher-mileage vehicles or if you have any specific concerns. It is your money and your purchase. You should feel good about it before you sign.
